Recently there were new regulations put in place that allow United States citizens to travel to Cuba without the need for obtaining a special license from the United States government. This marks the first time since 1961 that the two countries will engage in diplomatic relations. The latest measures regarding diplomatic relations have begun breaking down the US trade embargo, though only Congress can completely lift the ban. US Citizens can now use credit cares in Cuba and US businesses can export some technologies to the island. Americans can also bring back up to $100 in alcohol and tobacco from Cuba. Cigars for everybody!
Cuba has also released 53 political prisoners as part of the agreement.
Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to replacing out-of-date policies that were not working and puts in place a policy that helps promote political and economic freedom for the Cuban people
Said US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew. US firms will now have an easier time providing internet services in addition to mobile phones and software. This marks an historic moment for what’s been decades of alienation between the two nations.
