I enjoyed the last two Star Trek films, but the trailer for Star Trek Beyond has me scratching my head. Can you tell why?
In case you didn’t notice, it’s being directed by Justin Lin… sound familiar? He’s he dude who directed four of the Fast & Furious movies. I’ll give him this: his films are well produced and have a v very high success rate, but Star Trek and Fast & Furious are two vastly different worlds. The other thing that bothers me is the choice of soundtrack. I love The Beastie Boys, but their music doesn’t belong in a Star Trek trailer and it just didn’t fit… at all.
What we’ve got here is an action movie in space, and — unfortunately — that’s been the theme of the latest Star Trek films. For me, the TV shows have always been better than the movies, and while I enjoyed the last two I have a sneaking suspicion that this third film won’t live up to the previous ones. I may just be running my mouth and nitpicking, but I want more from these movies especially considering Chris Pine is such a damn good Kirk. With Simon Pegg as part of the writing team for Beyond there is some reason to look forward to the film, but Pegg said he’d been asked to make the new film “more inclusive.”
“They had a script for Star Trek that wasn’t really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little bit too Star Trek-y,”
That statement right there is exceedingly troubling. You want the fans to get involved in these films, you want the Trekies to get into it. Looks like they surely are going where no man has gone before with this new film… and not for the better.
