The Simpsons Might Be Calling It Quits In 2018

Well, someone’s not too happy about the title of this article!

Matt Groening’s beloved satire on an unaging family with jaundice has delighted people for almost thirty years, inspiring countless memes and merchandise. It is both the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American cartoon. The Simpsons are often credited with giving American animation aimed at an adult audience some credibility with countless imitators…cough…Fish Police…cough…Seth MacFarlane. Some of our readers may actually be younger than the show itself. But all things of this world, both good and bad, must come to and end, for are we not mortal? So, it may break a few hearts to know that the beloved show may be ending sooner than later.

Happy thoughts… happy thoughts…

Now, before you start to stock up on your Homer Simpsons Chia-Pets before its all gone, the show is still renewed until its 30th season, and it’s currently in season 27. However, even that is not exactly a safety net. According to show-runner, Al Jean, “It’s quite possible that we don’t have to go through the whole negotiation for 30. I wouldn’t be stunned if we stopped at 28 but my bet is on at least 30. But then you’d have to resign them again. If you made me pick one, I’d say the likeliest is ending after 30, but I’ve been wrong before. I thought five seasons was good when I got there.” Also, keep in mind, if this is what ends up happening, the show would be “ended,” not “cancelled,” since the decision would be made by those working on the show, rather than the network.

Now, where shall we turn for an endless supply of Halloween specials? Well, they sure ain’t endless, anymore…

So, the current expiration date is 2018. But nothing is for certain. After all, Jean initially left the show following its fourth season only to return for the tenth season. Things can change. Not to mention, Fox has had past animated shows that have come back from the grave, and then just won’t die again…cough…Seth MacFarlane….cough… On the other hand, it’s not like the cast and crew will live, forever, either. Although, if that was the issue, I am sure we could just replace them all with manatees.

In a bit of irony, their upcoming Treehouse of Horror special will also involve Sideshow Bob killing Bart… maybe he’s behind the cancellation?
