I know plenty of people who have liked Matthew McConaughey over the years, but in all honesty how many of us truly considered Matthew McConaughey a serious actor until recently? Sure he always seemed like a really cool guy in his movies, but the roles he played made it so easy for us to write him off as just another pretty face. Following his breakout role in Dazed and Confused he acted in 36 subsequent films including Angels in the Outfield,The Wedding Planner, Reign of Fire, We Are Marshall, Tropic Thunder and most recently Magic Mike and Dallas Buyers Club. Over the last 20 years McConaughey has slowly transformed from ‘that guy who never wears a shirt’ into an actor worthy of Oscar nominations.
Since his silver screen debut in 1993 McConaughey has shown glimmers of his talent, but was often cast in romantic comedies where he became known as more of a sex-symbol than a leading man and he was voted People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in 2005. He was a rough and tumble warrior in Reign of Fire and in We Are Marshall he put together a great performance in his portrayal of Jack Lengyal, but those roles weren’t enough to garner him substantial plaudits. Consequently he was still typecast as a romantic comedy actor and it wasn’t until he took a brief hiatus from acting that he was able to really delve into what he truly wanted to do. He began to take part in small, independent films that allowed him to broaden his range.
In 2013 McConaughey portrayed Ron Woodroof, a cowboy diagnosed with AIDS, in Dallas Buyers Club and it was this role that really blew the doors open for his career. The part required him to shed 38 pounds and his performance was so brilliant that it earned him a host of awards and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. McConaughey followed this up with True Detective, an HBO series in which he stars alongside Woody Harrelson. His character, Rusty Cohle, is a detective, who investigates a series of homicides over a 17-year span.
Those of you who have seen the show know just how fantastic Harrelson and McConaughey are and for those of you who haven’t you really should consider checking it out. The cat’s out of the bag here. McConaughey is a supremely talented actor and the days of writing him off are over. If he continues to produce fine performances like he has as of late then we’re all in for a real treat. His next feature film will be Chris Nolan’s sci-fi film Interstellar, which is scheduled to be released in November and McConaughey is cast as the lead.
Mr. McConaughey, I’m sorry I ever doubted you.
