“Good Witch” Returns To Its Roots With Halloween Special

Hallmark is known for their seasonal movies, and they are going to give their popular “Good Witch” series a Halloween special titled “Good Witch: Secrets of Grey House.” Oh yeah, this series is about to go full-circle.

The “Good Witch” franchise ironically started as a Halloween special of sorts, with a made-for-television movie telling the story of a woman named Cassie Nightingale (played by Catherine Bell) who moves to her ancestral home, “the Grey House,” and is believed by the people of her community to be a witch.

It probably does not help her case that she moonlights as owner of an antique shop called, “Bell, Book, and Candle,” named after that 1958 movie that inspired both Bewitched and the original Sabrina comics. It’s also an allusion to excommunication rites, so there’s that as well.

Before there was Sabrina and Salem, there was Kim Novak and Pyewacket.

A brother and sister, who clearly never read Hansel and Gretel, befriend the lonely woman and she becomes a good fixture in their lives, eventually marrying their widowed father and becoming their stepmother. The original telefilm proved popular enough with audiences that Hallmark gradually commissioned quite a few sequels and eventually its own series on the network, detailing the life of Cassie and her now teen-aged daughter who was born in the later movies.

I always told Glinda that she should have looked into trademarking.

A running theme throughout the series is the ambiguity with regards to whether or not Cassie is or isn’t a witch. The first movie offered a third alternative of sorts, teasing that Cassie was possibly the ‘Grey Lady,’ a ghost who was said to haunt the Grey House estate, but this concept was dropped in later installments. Considering she was able to have a daughter, she probably is not a ghost, but given that the special’s title has “Secrets of Grey House” for a subtitle, you can bet your sweet bippy that they’ll probably touch upon just what happened to the Grey Lady.

The higher-ups on the show hope to make the Halloween specials an annual tradition. “We’re really in our infancy because it’s a series and not movies, so we’re going into our third season and I think there’s so much [to explore] … Hopefully it’s the beginning of a long love story between all of us and ‘Good Witch,'” said executive producer Orly Adelson in a released statement.

The upcoming special will premiere this upcoming Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Hallmark channel.
