Rick and Morty season 3 is likely going to be just as spectacular, if not more, than its previous two seasons. The show has brilliant writers and animators, and what’s incredibly important is that the show makes you think, or at least creator Dan Harmon wants it to make you think.
That said, it’s pretty safe to say that a great deal of Rick and Morty fans understand this and do just that. So, to preface season 3, Harmon and Adult Swim released the below video, which goes down the rabbit hole of the theology of the Rick and Morty universe. More pointedly, Harmon explains to us how Rick is the bridge between God and mankind.
“There’s a heavy theme of creator and createe in Rick and Morty,” Harmon says. “It’s a fun idea for me that we have gods, we search for meaning, and the highest thought we could have. ‘Who made me?’ and ‘I’m going to make other things.’”
The video points to numerous examples the show that support this rhetoric and just like that, in classic Rick and Morty fashion, we’ve all been taught a powerful cosmic lesson. The beauty of this clip, and a lot of what Harmon says in general, is that you don’t have to agree with what he says and you certainly don’t have to like it. There are a lot of nihilistic and even arrogant viewpoints in his work, and his diatribes, but that’s on purpose.
The main takeaway from the clip is that life is not meant to be experienced through a nihilistic, carefree lens. It’s when you do care and do enjoy every moment and good experience that you fully appreciate what’s going on around you.
Make what you will of the clip, but I’m excited for season 3 and I know you all are, too.
